Help! naming Ionic and Polyatomic coumpounds PLZ TEST TOMM!!?
I understand the basics such as:
(all numbers are subscripts)
Aluminum Nitrate = Al(NO3)3
BUT when i do the reverse….as in if i get the formula and have to name it..when do i add prefixes?
such as:
Carbon DIoxide.
basically, i need to know when to add prefixes (mono, di, tri, tetra,penta etc…)
Do i add them when there are 2 non metals…. or when there are two metals…or when there is a mixture of both.
Help would be MUCH appriciated.
Also, if you can, please give the answer to this, so that i can use it as an example.
Write the name for the following compound:
Fe(ClO3)4
and
Li2SO4

You only add prefixes when you are dealing with two non-metals. However, you only add prefixes to the first part of the compound starting from di.
For example:
NO –> Nitrogen Monoxide, NOT mononitrogen monoxide.
N2O3 –> Dinitrogen Trioxide
