Bike frame made out of fiber?
Can a bike frame really be made out of carbon fiber? I know that carbon fiber is light weight, strong, moldable to any shape, expensive, and almost impossible to repair. Arnt bike seats and handle bars made out of that?
Carbon Fiber (CF) can be designed so it is light and strong. But it is far easier to make a non recyclable paper weight than something useful. Witness all those Kestrel and 2nd generation Trek owners with cracked frames.
The best supported CF frames to my knowledge are from Aegis. They have the best repair policy that I’ve seen. And their frames are durable by design. Many triathletes use Aegis and for good reason. BTW, the 1st gen Treks were made by Aegis and held up.
But don’t count out other materials. A well designed part made from aluminum, steel, or titanium can be nearly as light and more cost effective. They can also be more real world durable as they are less prone damage from sharp objects. Puncture the resin covering all that fiber and all bets are off.
