The Origin Of Indoor Cycling

Indoor cycling or spinning is basically a set of activities done as to mimic cycling outdoors without leaving the room.

The curriculum of indoor cycling involves a set of exercises, that focus on endurance, strength building, interval pacing and health recovery. Indoor cycling is done in any room or flat area. The machines are specially designed not only for paddling or cycling, but has weights built in to simulate actual track conditions.

The idea of indoor cycling came from an athlete named John Goldberg. He wanted to find another way to minimize accidents that happened on outdoor tracks while building up the skills and strengths of the cyclists. John proposed the use of a large disc, he called the “flywheel”, that could simulate cycling conditions. This invention was built in to every training machine and then later adapted to modern gyms and are the ones seen in every stationary bike machine.

Indoor cycling goals

As compared to an actual outdoor training, spinning is the same except the rider is stationary. As a normal class starts, the instructor or leader would lead the class through a series of terrains. These are simulated by linking the main or lead bike to the “training” bikes. In effect, it is like following the leader through different turns and paths. The leader determines how a track may have various inclines or drops in terrain.

Each team has an exertion/power level threshold, that has to be established at the start of every training exercise, so that the lead biker would know how to pace the class. The levels start from 1, which means little or minimal effort, or a 10 which means maximum effort. Trainer and trainee have to agree on what system can be used to play up the bikers strengths and improve their weaknesses.

Trainers in indoor cycling may use any form to motivate the trainees to push their limits. This includes playing music to a hard cheering coaching voice in their ear to get their game on. While music is not necessary, the tempo or beat helps push riders into following their own tempo or cadence. It merely helps the rider maintain his or her focus while biking.

Water is the number one item, that every attendee must bring in every indoor cycling session. Each rider is expected to drink a lot of water per session, for it is known for dehydration to set in after an hours work. It is calculated, that one minute of hard riding will demand 2 ounces of water. By this gauge the riders know how much to drink in a race.

Spinning introduces the riders to three main sitting or riding positions they can adapt, so that they do not lose their pace. The first position is when the rider is seated and their hands are laid to rest on the handle bars. This is a laid back or cruising pose. The second position is where the rider can raise their body by simply extending or raising their legs, while still resting their hands on the handle bars. The third position is when the rider may stand up and extend their bodies over the front of the bikes. In essence it is as if, the rider is trying to stretch forward. This position is used, when riders have to climb steep hills or steep elevations.

Indoor cycling may not be for everyone. It is really a physically demanding sport.
