Carbon Cycling Shoes

Do I need a cleat and to change my pedals with my new road shoes?
I bought some cycling shoes in the sale – they are Bontrager WSD RL Road Shoes. My bike is a hybrid with the standard pedals that came with it – they’re the shape of the pedals shown on this page http://www.treehugger.com/files/2004/11/sahalie_self_po.php
It looks to me like the carbon soles of the shoes would be damaged by the spikiness on the pedals. Have I made a mistake purchase (the shoes fit beautifully) or should I buy different pedals and a cleat? I don’t know anything about these things so please can you explain.
For background, I have been cycling to work on the bike for a few months now and now I want to cycle more but think the bike is too heavy and think I should save up for a road bike… but that will have to wait for a few more months.

You are right, those pedals will damage the shoes. You could put road pedals on your hybrid, save the old ones and when you buy a road bike which will come without pedals, transfer the pedals or get a second set of road pedals.
On the other hand, using the road pedals on the hybrid for commuting may be a little awkward since you will have to get in and out of the cleats so often depending on the traffic conditions. And you will need to carry a second pair of shoes to use at work.
There are some mountain shoes that are made to get dirty and are kind of tough but the difference between a road shoe and a some slick mountain shoes is that the mountain shoe has a few more grams of rubber on the sole and the cleat seats on a recess so you can walk on them. The mountain shoe also use a two screw cleat while the road shoe uses a three screw cleat. I pref fer the two hole system even for the road and I think road shoes will adopt the mountain style except for the highest levels of competition.
So, you might have bought the shoes too soon. See if you can return them and trade for a mountain pair. They should fit you just as well. Actually, they may be the same shoe with a different sole.
I think that you are itching for a road bike though. This is what I got. It comes with pedals and includes the two screw cleats to attach to a two screw shoe, Shimon 105 rear derailleur, weights 20 lbs on a 52 cm frame, nice deep V hand build tires. Highly recommend it.

Carbon Cycling in the Baltic Sea $129 The Baltic Sea is an area extensively explored by the oceanographers. Hence it is one of the most often described marine areas in the scientific literature.
